Legend has it that these shells were once the exclusive property of Hawaiian royalty. Sunrise shells are small scallops of the bivalvia class known as Decatopecten noduliferum. They dwell on the sandy ocean floor to depths of 300 feet. They are found throughout the Hawaiian Island chain.
